Village Elephants Breeding to Giving Birth

In many rural villages across Asia and parts of Africa, elephant breeding is a traditional and deeply respected practice. Elephants have been domesticated for centuries for work, ceremonial purposes, and, more recently, for conservation. The process from breeding to birth is long and requires careful observation, patience, and gentle care.

Breeding begins with selecting healthy, mature elephants—typically males over 20 years and females over 15. In a village setting, mahouts (elephant caretakers) often observe signs of a female in estrus (heat), which includes increased vocalizations, restlessness, and urine marking.
